Gladys Matthews
May 31, 1919 - March 12, 2010Mrs. Gladys B. Matthews, 90, of Fuquay Varina, died Friday, March 12 at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn. A native of Harnett County, she was the daughter of the late Fred H. and Newell Thomas Brown. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her husband James Elmo Matthews; son, Fred Lee Matthews and great grandson, Fred Lee “Matt” Matthews, III. She was a member of the Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church, Fuquay-Varina, with the Rev. Joe Green and the Rev. C. Paul Jones presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall, and other times at her home.

Survivors include sons, Jimmy Matthews and wife Jody and Davey “Elmo” Matthews, all of Fuquay-Varina; daughter, Barbara M. Barbour and husband Paul of Fuquay-Varina; eight grandchildren, Barry Barbour, Pam Barbour Denning, Tonja Matthews Singleton and husband Mike, Lee Matthews and wife Robin, Brandon Matthews, Tracie Matthews, Walt Temple and wife Dana, and Eric Matthews; ten great-grandchildren, Bryan Denning, Ashlyn Denning, Hope Singleton Long and husband Scott,
Charity Singleton, Josh Singleton, Brice Matthews, Kyle Matthews, Cole Matthews, Caleb Temple and Rachel Temple; two great-great- grandchildren, Adison Singleton and Bryleigh Long; two sisters, Hazel Stephens of Fuquay-Varina and Louise Green of McIntosh, Fla.; two brothers, Buddy Brown of Rockingham and Ralph Brown of Lillington.
