The term traditional services covers a wide variety
of funeral services in today's society. A traditional service may vary
from different parts of the country depending on local, religious, or
ethnic customs. Traditional services usually include a number of similar
parts to a funeral ceremony:
- VIEWING OF THE DECEASED gives the
opportunity for friends and family members to say goodbye to the
deceased.
- VISITATION provides an opportunity for
the family to draw comfort from other members of the family and
friends.
- CEREMONY which may be religious based
and include scripture, poems, and remembrances of the deceased
individual. A eulogy, which may be given by clergy, family members, or
friends, often conveys fond memories of the deceased. It can also be
used to share the philosophy of the deceased to be used as an example
for others to follow. Ethnic and religious rituals are often included
in the ceremony. In recent years, these ceremonies are often
personalized by using objects closely associated with the deceased.
- PHOTOGRAPHS, mementos, and hobby items
can be displayed during the visitation and ceremony time.
- DISPOSITION of the deceased follows the
ceremony. Common forms of disposition are earth burial, entombment in
a mausoleum, or cremation. Any one of these may include a procession
to the cemetery or crematory so that the friends and family may
accompany the deceased to their final resting place. Sometimes special
vehicles are used to reflect the employment or lifestyle of the
deceased. Whether it be a fire engine, motorcycles, or a unique sports
car, these special vehicles can be included in the procession to the
cemetery.
